The term “Vai” is a corrupted derivative of the word “Bhai”, meaning “brother” in both Bengali and Hindi. Among the Hmar and other related Mizo tribes, Vai has undergone a semantic shift and is presently employed as a general ethnolinguistic label for all Bengali and Hindi-speaking populations.
